The three sheriffs and Buzz Kaminski were sipping coffee and listening to the Ranger’s radio net, when Roland Jefferson, Kaminski’s partner, walked in. Jefferson, who’d driven over from El Paso, was tired and sleepy. “What’s up?” Jefferson asked, after being introduced.

“Ron, we’re listening to the Rangers’ radio net, just like we did at Neely’s Crossing—the same unit. They’re getting ready to disinfect the Table Top Wilderness Area, lots of unwanted varmints there.”

“You mean we’ve finally got permission from Interior to enter the area?” Jefferson asked, and looked perplexed when the sheriffs laughed.

“Ron,” Buzz replied, “the President sent a member of his staff to, shall we say, establish priorities for Interior. I doubt we will hear any more from them.”

“Who’d he send?” Jefferson shuddered, for he’d had firsthand experience with the president’s methods. I guess I deserved my demotion. He could have fired me, Jefferson decided, finally admitting he had made a mistake. George Alexander, his former boss at Homeland Security and now the statutory president had demoted him to a GS-12 Border Patrol Officer, assigned to El Paso.

Kaminski turned and looked at his partner, wondering why he asked. “Major Taylor.”

“Julian Taylor?”

“Yes, do you know him?”

“I’ve met him.” Jefferson decided he’d said too much and changed the subject. “Buzz, does that mean we can enter the area?”

Kaminski gave his partner a hard look, wondering how he knew Taylor. He realized that he knew very little about Jefferson. “Ron, do you remember Master Sergeant O’Rourke?”

“Yeah, how could I forget him? Is he here too?”

“Yeah, I’ll contact him and see if we can hook up with his unit. He’s working the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument area.”
